Conde Nast Traveler interviews Wangari Maathai, winner of the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize and founder of Kenya's Green Belt Movement, which has planted 30 million trees in Kenya and one billion worldwide. Maathai's group teaches the relationship between poverty, environmental degradation, and conflict. Her current project is to save the Congo Basin forest, which is threatened by illegal logging, mining, and hunting, and plays an important role in absorbing global carbon dioxide. However, this short interview barely scrapes the surface of the accomplishments of this inspiring environmental leader.
